This is a condition that is called gestational diabetes. This happens because of the way a female's body reacts to the hormone insulin while she is pregnant. Her blood sugar aka, blood glucose level gets elevated. Early detection is the key to avoid any complications that may affect the baby or the mother.

Some women get diabetes only while pregnant. The name for this kind of diabetes is gestational. Pregnancy hormones increase your body’s need for insulin. Occasionally, your body cannot make enough insulin to match the increased demand. Other times, the human body may not properly use the insulin it makes. Many people may have had diabetes prior to becoming pregnant, but just found it during the pregnancy. Your doctor may examine you for pre existing type 2 diabetes at the first prenatal visit in case you are at high risk.

How do you know if you have gestational diabetes?

A blood test called a glucose tolerance test is the way to learn if you might have gestational diabetes. This evaluation is done between the 24-26 weeks of pregnancy. This should be done in the morning after an overnight fast (no food or fluid with calories) of at least 8 hours. You'll be asked to drink a glucose (sugar) solution.

The test results are derived from the 3 blood glucose levels

92 - before drinking the glucose solution
180 - one hour after drinking the glucose
153 - two hours after drinking the glucose
You have gestational diabetes, if your blood glucose level is equivalent to or higher than any one of these degrees. Communicate with your physician about your results.

What occurs after pregnancy?

Gestational diabetes usually goes away after pregnancy. You could get gestational diabetes in future pregnancies. Some women with gestational diabetes get Type. To reduce risk for Type 2 diabetes later in life, do the following:

Keep your weight standard.
Eat foods that are healthful.
Exercise often.
Are you in danger for diabetes?

You might be at an increased risk for diabetes if you are described by among the following:

Pregnant and over 25 years old
Overweight before getting pregnant
Family history of diabetes
African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, or Native American
